DailySing - 209 (8.30.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Friday, August 31, 2012, In : Daily Sing
As I listen to tonight's playback, I can hear the progress I've made in the choices I make in the recording.

I feel the vulnerability of coming up with a slammin' solo every single time the opportunity calls for it! I am too aware of every single flicker or lack of solidity in a note, to get cocky. That beautiful journey I've ensnared the audience to take with me can all come crashing down with the utterance of one single faltering note.

But I do have exhuberance, and I can feel it in all of th...

DailySing - 206 (8.27.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, In : Daily Sing
Today I had the luxury of beng home and I took advantage by singing on the balcony during this most beautiful afternoon.

This tune came out that comes around accasionally, and instead of trying to go somewhere new and different, I stuck with it and discovered different and new ways to playwith, stretch, invert, modulate and dance around the main melodic idea.It was quite the learning experience, and I felt re-energized!

I had a good time, and I can hear it in the playback.

DailySing - 200 (8.19.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Monday, August 20, 2012, In : Daily Sing
A pretty joyous weekend led to the sounds that were generated tonight...

I wanted to have tonight's musical journey be interesting enough to a listener, that they would pay to see me create in front of their eyes. I think I had some moments tonight that worked very well, and while I could occasionally catch a weak transition, the overall effect wasn't bad. I was entertained while listening to the playback.

I starts off rather gently, then I added a soft backbeat while I expanded on the main mel...

DailySing - 151 (6.30.2012)

Another road trip for tonight's DailySing...

As varied as these different themes were, they felt like defaults that I always fall back on.

Playback was a little frustrating. At least now I know what to change n the furture.

DailySing - 123 (6.2.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Sunday, June 3, 2012, In : Daily Sing
I went about singing tonight with the same "nose to the grindstone" attitude that I had last night. This slogging through my own barriers and obstacles feels like a phase in the learning, and it doesn't feel like it'll end soon.

I ranged far and wide in my vocal explorations tonight. To keep going in my upper register, several solos were based on the electric guitar with wah-wah pedal.

There was a smidgeon of spoken word and some rhythmic play and some ballad-like passages.
I am very blessed t...

DailySing - 115 (5.25.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Saturday, May 26, 2012, In : Daily Sing
Tonight's DailySing had humor in it. While listening to the playback, I was pleased with the way I was building the jam around the main melody, then breaking everything up with two vp interludes followed by a solo exploration, into a rhythmic approach to the next solo exploration. And that's just the first third of the whole improv.

I seem to be breaking the longer jams into sections in my mind. This one started with a theme that I kept throughout the singing. It essentially has a beginning mi...

DailySing - 113 (5.23.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Thursday, May 24, 2012, In : Daily Sing
I was struck by the disparity between what we "perform" and what we glean from the playback.

While I was singing, I felt on top of the world. When I listened to the playback, my perceptions were different and I could hear the flaws that had not been evident until after the adrenaline wore off.

Many brilliant ideas remain, and when I started tonight's DailySing, I was inpired.
There are rhythmic grooves, long strains of solo voice, vocal percussion and a lot more in this session.

DailySing - 109 (5.19.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Sunday, May 20, 2012, In : Daily Sing
Tonight's DailySing was the expression of a satiated spirit, slow, loose, easy and relaxed. Maybe a little too relaxed as I dozed off five times.

I started in a slow ballad mode, and during the playback, I can hear myself sounding more and more tired, and less and less coherent musically. I was very content with what I was experiencing and stopped mid-phrase. A few seconds of dead air, then I come back in as if nothing had ever happened.

I even added some syncopation to the melody in lieu of a ...

DailySing - 97 (5.7.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, In : Daily Sing
I feel totally uninspired and mechanical. However, when I listen to the playback, it doesn't sound half bad and I wonder at the role of perception in my life. We (humans) alter our appearance, what we say, and even what we think in order to be perceived a certain way.

I had fun exploring my upper register again, but a harder time returning to the melody... and it changed all throught the 15 minutes.

DailySing - 81 (4.21.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Sunday, April 22, 2012, In : Daily Sing
Almost missed it. I fell asleep and woke up in the nick of time. Groggy and sleepy are how I felt when I started, yet as I listen to the playback, the session was full of memorable moments, humour and unexpected choices.

It was one of those times when I stayed with a riff and explored all around it while always coming back to the main melody. I played with rhythm and even left the beat behind at one point. This felt satisfying...

DailySing - 76 (4.16.2012)

Feeling run down and not like singing at all, but it' s turned out to be invigorating!

I do remember that at one point I fell asleep, but that comes later in the playback. So far I sound inspired. I'd listen to this if it were on a CD. That should be my project, to create a CD from all improvized pieces, then go back, overdub and flesh them all out.

The way I'm singing tonight, it could work... Inspired creativity in the moment. I start with a riff and explore it, move away from it, come back ...

DailySing - 70 (4.10.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, In : Daily Sing
I felt full, content and sleepy after a fine dinner and bedtime story with my daughter. The last thing I wanted to do was sing, but that's what I did. It's amazing how much rejuvenation occurs when you are following your passion. I feel totally energized while listening to the playback.

I started a motif and stayed with it through all of its permutations and variations, dipping into several bridges, skirting various choruses and was rather playful the whole 15 minutes.

 This felt like building ...

DailySing - 69 (4.9.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, In : Daily Sing
My journey tonight feels non descript, or a bit bland. It feels like I am being safe. I set up a pattern and keep coming back to it after several excursions into soloing as a voice or being one of the instruments. It feels like I stay safe within the confines of my structure...

Now that I listen to the playback, it sounds richer and more dynamic than when I was actually doing it. Perceptions are everything, it seems.

Using my chest to beat on while I sing is not technically VP, but it really h...

DailySing - 51 (3.22.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Friday, March 23, 2012, In : Daily Sing
Now, instead of trying to find a theme and coming back to it, my brain wants to just go and explore with no rhyme or reason, just for the sheer joy of discovery and play.

I mean, why not give my brain free license? Something will come of this, It always does.Listening to the playback,  I can hear certain patterns and choices that I always make. Do I simply acknowledge them, or do I try to change them? No, I simply augment them for now. I'll observe what I do then look for alternatives to enric...

DailySing - 42 (3.13.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, In : Daily Sing
My iPod has rebooted and all is now well. I sang to celebrate, after an exceedingly long day and found myself drifting off as I was singing. I didn't find any gaps in the playback, but my focus was elsewhere at the time I was singing.
I found myself juxtaposing disparate elements like a jazz rhythm and melody in a chorus while the the verses have more of a blues feel, and the bridge sounds African.
And I seem to be casting my net far and wide this evening, as I listen to the playback. I go fro...

DailySing - 40 (3.11.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Monday, March 12, 2012, In : Daily Sing
Our emotional landscape directly affects the content of the music, the method of performance, and the energy invested. Seems rather obvious, but the visceral experience is noteworthy.
I had quite a good day, first breakfast with my daughter India, followed by teaching at choir, India's friend Philina's birthday party, where one of the other parents played piano while I jammed with my voice and beatbox rhythms, pick up my wife Billie from a workshop that she loved, then home for pizza from Mam...

DailySing - 38 (3.9.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Saturday, March 10, 2012, In : Daily Sing
I really need to look at my microphone. Parts of the playback are hard to hear because of it. Also, at this point in time, I am doing myself a disservice by singing late at night, at the end of my day. I find myself in a twilight between sleep and wakefulness where I am only aware of what I am singing by listening to the recording. I will focus on singing in the morning for now...!

Sometimes, like tonight, I wonder what I am doing with this singing thing, I try to remember why this is so important and realize that I and this pact are still getting used to one another. It's early, and I want to catch up on some badly needed sleep, but NOOOO.... I gotta do todays' DailySing... And I feel annoyed... annoyed at this thing I love, annoyed at myself for putting us (me, myself and I) in this position. The lofty goals of learning about myself and attaining some deeper understand...

Tonight's exploration started with me wanting to sing The Waters of March, by Carlos Antonio Jobim, then seeing where the journey would take me. In listening to the playback, I realize something was very wrong with the microphone, but that didn't hamper my vocal trek.

Singing tonight was about experiencing the act of singing as free and easy, with no constraints or expectations, while maintaining enough focus to explore my vocal qualities several layers beneath the main melody. I also was ab...

DailySing - 25 (2.25.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Sunday, February 26, 2012, In : Daily Sing
A lullaby from Zimbabwe was my launching place tonight. I don't know why, but it's the first thing that came out of my mouth. I've been training myself to go with whatever comes out at any given time, whether I like it or not. When I went blank and sang, the song Si, Si Si came out. Once that was explored, I kept myself blank and open. It's always educational and entertaining to listen to the playback. Some of the coolest stuff, I don't even remember singing, which is a little trippy. Listeni...

DailySing - 20 (2.20.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, In : Daily Sing
As I listen to what I just sang, I have to admit to a certain amount of playfulness in what I do. At certain points in my listening, I broke out into a big smile, and once I even laughed out loud. Come to think of it, I laughed out loud and was grinning most of the time during the creation of tonight's improvisation. My listening was easier and deeper, though the ease seemed to belie the depth to a small degree. Rhythm is a huge part of what I do. In the future, I'll see if I can be lyrical w...

DailySing - 9 (2.9.2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Friday, February 10, 2012, In : Daily Sing
I'm amazed at the many places inside us that music comes from. Laughter, sadness, that pain in our heart, the euphoria bursting forth from our throat, the heat in our loins, it's all energies from different places within us. I was fired up from Men's group and brought that fire to tonight's song play. I once again left my body and came back to it (or woke up) singing. This time, I was aware of the fact that I experienced time dilation while being "away". In two separate instances, I remember ...

DailySing - 7 (2/7/2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, In : Daily Sing
The repeated huffing of Timbu, the male of our twin cats, led to an approximation of rhythm which started this little foray into unknown waters. I didn't stick to a musical path or idea, but neither was I a completely free and open channel. I was aware of drifting in and out of knowing where I was musically, and in and out of caring. Tonight was another last minute dealio, where I hit the record button at 11:44 PM. I feel restless and disjointed inside, and that's what I hear in the music dur...

DailySing - 6 (2/6/2012)

Posted by Emile Dyer on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, In : Daily Sing
I decided to start my singing earlier in the evening, just after putting my daughter to bed, and today's exploration was inspired by my wife. I was humming the bass line for Come Together just as Billie started talking to me. The musicality of the way she was speaking and the tones she was hitting, turned what I was doing into a minor "thang".The rhythm of her spinning wheel was a part of my backbeat, and the dropped knitting needles became percussive accents to the sound salad. One of the ca...

If you can talk, you can sing

Emile Hassan Dyer I believe that singing is our birthright, and that it is good for our brains, bodies, and spirit. Singing releases oxytocin in the brain, and many studies have shown a correlation of oxytocin with human bonding, increases in trust, feelings of calmness and security, as well as reductions in anxiety. In other words, SINGING IS GOOD FOR YOU! I get high making up music on the spot. I get high(er) when I can do it with several people at once. There's nothing like riding the crest of a creative wave, linked harmonically and rhythmically, supporting, leading, following, creating, coaxing, cajoling, p-l-a-y-i-n-g... THAT'S MY BLISS! Singing for 15 minutes a day means trusting yourself. It means clearing your mind, opening up and discovering what sounds can come out through you, if you allow it. To listen to each of my daily sings, click on the "songs" link on the left in the grey field above the most recent post or on the link at the end of each post.
